Observed climate change in Hesse


Hessian Centre on Climate Change

Just like the global changes, the effects of climate change are also unmistakable in Hesse and the FrankfurtRheinMain region: one temperature record follows the other, periods with extreme heat are becoming longer, and precipitation is shifting into different seasons. The Hessian Centre on Climate Change conducts research projects to study the possible changes, consequences and effects in Hesse as well as to develop adaptation measures. A majority of the observations on temperature and precipitation described below has been compiled by the Hessian Centre on Climate Change; other sources are listed.


Temperature

  • On the 7th of August 2015, the German Weather Service measured a temperature of 39.6° C in Frankfurt-Westend, the highest temperature ever recorded in the State of Hesse since weather records have been kept [1]
  • The linear trend between 1951 and 2010 shows an increase of the mean annual temperature in Hesse by 1.3 °C
  • 60-year measurements of the German Weather Service at the Frankfurt am Main airport show an increase of the mean annual temperature by 0.35° C per decade [2]

Precipitation

  • The volume of annual mean precipitation increased from 1951 to 2010 by 5% (linear trend)
  • Seasonal shifts of precipitation between 1951 and 2010: spring, fall, and winter showed precipitation increases of 12 to 17%, in summer precipitation decreased by 16% (linear trend)
